The Commanders have lost another offensive lineman. Tackle Lucas Niang, who the team signed just two weeks ago, will miss the upcoming season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, coach Dan Quinn announced Sunday.
Niang was slated to replace fellow lineman Nate Herbig, who retired last month after signing with the Commanders earlier in the offseason.
“He had done a really nice job for us in a short time,” Quinn said of Niang. “Really bummed for him.”
A third-round pick in 2020, Niang spent the first five seasons of his NFL career with the Kansas City Chiefs. After winning a pair of Super Bowls with the Chiefs, he became a free agent this offseason.
For a short time, he joined fellow ex-Chiefs Andrew Wylie and Nick Allegretti in Washington’s offensive line room.
The team is still waiting on the return of guard Sam Cosmi, who tore his ACL during last season’s playoff win against the Detroit Lions. Quinn has said Cosmi could return ahead of the regular-season opener against the New York Giants on Sept. 7.
The Commanders have not said who would take Niang’s spot on the training camp roster.
