OPINION:
The U.S. trade deficit in goods reached a record-breaking $1.2 trillion in 2024 and it’s growing by double digits every year. That’s money leaving this country, going to other nations and making us poorer. It’s a game we’re losing, but one that President Trump really wants to win using tariffs.
The U.S. is the largest consumer — and therefore the largest market — in the world. That means the sellers of the goods we buy care more about selling to us than we care about buying from them. We could always purchase a given product from another seller or even make that product ourselves. In poker, such a situation is called having pocket aces.
The stakes are high and if we stay strong and don’t fold our hand because the stock market waffles, we will this hand — and win big.
