The Washington Commanders’ lackluster secondary was a common sore spot for fans last season.

The group got an upgrade as general manager Adam Peters selected Ole Miss cornerback Trey Amos on Friday with the 29th pick in the NFL draft’s second round.

Amos was an All-SEC selection in his final year at Ole Miss. The 23-year-old recorded interceptions in his lone season with the Rebels after starting his career with Louisiana before transferring to Alabama.

The second-rounder fills an immediate need for the Commanders. Amos will likely start as an outside cornerback opposite Marshon Lattimore, who Washington added via trade last season.

The move allows Mike Sainristil, a second-round pick in last year’s draft, to move to his more natural slot cornerback position.

Amos has also thrived in press coverage, a favorite tactic for Commanders coach Dan Quinn’s defensive scheme.
