OPINION:
In an attempt to convince the rest of us that theirs is the party of democracy and social justice, Democratic members of Congress are swarming to El Salvador to meet with and attempt to free and bring back to the U.S. a Salvadoran criminal who was here illegally in the first place (“Federal judge temporarily halts order for details on any efforts to return Abrego Garcia to U.S.,” Web, April 24). These are adults. The optics are so pathetic, I’m laughing.
Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the latest focus of congressional Democrats’ “compassion” project, is the last person I would want my daughter to date. George Floyd was another such individual. These men are merely two examples in a long list of very damaged, disturbed (and disturbing) characters whom those on the political left have taken to swarming around for the sole purpose of “re-branding” themselves as champions of the marginalized. Maybe some people buy it; I certainly don’t.
But even if these men were deserving of compassion and aid, why don’t Democrats rally around other people who would be contributing to the wealth and greatness of our country had they not been marginalized, disenfranchised and generally unfairly treated? This is the paradox of today’s Democrats: On the one hand, they court Hollywood glitz while on the other, they coddle toxic waste. You can’t do both and remain sane; hence today’s Democratic Party.
I really don’t think this is what Emma Lazarus had in mind when she penned “The New Colossus.”
