Trinity Rodman, a star with the NWSL’s Washington Spirit and the U.S. women’s soccer team, is stepping away from the Spirit indefinitely to deal with a nagging back injury.

“Trinity is taking time away from team activities to manage her back,” a Spirit spokesperson told several outlets on Saturday. “We look forward to her returning when she’s healthy.”

The 22-year-old has struggled with back injuries since her first season with the Spirit in 2021. Though she has occasionally missed time, the forward has been a goal-scoring machine for club and country when healthy.

Rodman scored 23 goals in her first four seasons with the Spirit. She’s added seven goals for the U.S. National Team, including three scores in last year’s Olympic gold-medal run in Paris.

The forward told reporters last month that she believed her back would never be “100%” again.

“I think we’ve managed it really well and I’m happy with the progression that we’ve had,” she said after a Spirit victory over Bay FC. “But for me, I don’t think my back will ever be the way it was my rookie year, which is unfortunate.”

Rodman did not score in four appearances for the Spirit this season. The club ranks third in the NWSL with four wings through their first five matches.
