Why does Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump have to go the salacious route (“Trump reposts sexual innuendo about Harris on Truth Social,” web, Aug. 28)? Mr. Trump has some skeletons in his closet, too, so to bring up Vice President Kamala Harris in this way is both unnecessary and hurtful.

Surely he remembers the scandal created in 2016 when nude pictures of his wife were all over the web. The word “shocking” is thrown around in politics more often than a Frisbee on a college campus, but a 2016 New York Post featuring a naked Melania Trump — with strategically placed stars — arguably deserves the description. The all-capitals headline on the story read “THE OGLE OFFICE.” This, too, was highly unnecessary.

Mr. Trump is not exactly perfect or saintly, and implying that his Democratic rival’s political career began in the bedroom seems a lot like the pot calling the kettle black. Ms. Harris is a human being like everybody else, and nobody is perfect. We must judge people by their present actions, not their pasts. We would all do better to look in the mirror rather than at each other’s foibles.
