OPINION:
Linda Sun is yet another alleged spy born in China who managed to infiltrate the American government for years before being caught (“Former senior aide to New York governor arrested as Chinese agent,” web, Sept. 3). She joins a long list of other spies accused of engaging in political and commercial espionage, most with ties to China.
In testimony to Congress, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew used as an excuse for his company’s espionage in the U.S. that he had a passport from Singapore, a country whose biggest immigrant group are Chinese nationals who also interfere in politics.
China considers ethnic Chinese such as Ms. Sun “hua qiao,” or “overseas Chinese,” meaning the country considers them part of China. China’s diaspora policy is that Beijing counts them as part of the “Chinese nation.” Mr. Xi has called on ethnic Chinese around the world “to tell Beijing’s story.”
It appears Ms. Sun was simply doing what everyone else in her shoes was doing.
