Those attending the U.N. General Assembly over the next two weeks could lead by example when it comes to climate change. Heads of state, ambassadors, military attaches and security personnel can give up having limousines take them to and from their embassies, hotels or residences to the United Nations.

These motorcades contribute to traffic gridlock and increase air pollution. Attendees should join 4 million New Yorkers by riding the subway or taking the bus. They can enjoy some fresh air and walk from any nearby subway station or bus stop to the U.N., mingling with ordinary citizens to develop a better understanding of America and its people.

If congestion pricing kicks in starting in January or later, no one involved in the General Assembly should be exempt from paying, nor should any be offered discounts.
