OPINION:
Amazingly, no one in Israel seems to have been killed by this week’s missile barrage by Iran (“Iran and Israel exchange threats following Tehran’s missile barrage,” web, Oct. 2).
The Israeli defenses are obviously extremely effective at destroying incoming missiles, even when they arrive in waves numbering in the hundreds.
Also amazingly, the Biden administration (including, of course, Vice President Kamala Harris) continues to pressure Israel for a cease-fire. This proves that our government does not understand that the ’current’ conflict over Israel’s existence is not ever going to go away. A cease-fire only stops the carnage for a short time, until Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran can get organized for yet another round of atrocities like those of last Oct. 7.
Our politicians appear to have no idea of the threat that Islamist, Sharia-dominated Iran poses to the world order, or the fact that to Iran, Israel is merely a proxy for its real enemy, the Great Satan (the United States). As President Biden should have learned from Neville Chamberlain’s experience with Hitler just prior to World War II, one cannot placate or buy off enemies that have an implacable determination to destroy one’s own nation and way of life — and Iran is just such an enemy.
Israel must be left in a position to defend itself and defeat Hezbollah, Hamas and Iran. We know that there is no limit to these monsters’ hatred, and when the ayatollahs do finally possess nuclear weapons, they will try to destroy Israel in the final act of their holy war.
This must be realistically faced by our leaders, as it is courageously faced every day by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli military and the Israeli people. If not, I fear we could soon see the beginning of a nuclear World War III.
