Judges and law enforcement officers are truly the guardians of civilization. Without them, society would quickly fall into chaos. It is their job to discourage criminal activity, apprehend criminals, protect citizens and provide social tranquility.

Unfortunately, their jobs are becoming increasingly dangerous. Newspapers, television news and other news sources increasingly document their murders and injuries at the hands of unlawful criminal behavior (“Anti-Israel protester charged with assaulting two police officers in D.C.,” web, Oct. 10).

Interestingly, the Bible spells out the need for both judges and law enforcement officers. Chapter 18 of Deuteronomy clearly states, “You shall appoint judges and officers throughout your tribes, in all your towns that the Lord your God is giving you.”

With regard to the danger faced by law enforcement officers, I believe severe penalties for the perpetrators would discourage further attacks. Murdering a police officer should be given a very high priority and a very harsh penalty.
