Democratic House candidate Eugene Vindman was victorious Wednesday over his Republican opponent for Virginia’s 7th District.

He won the support against opponent Derrick Anderson, a Republican. The seat was open since three-term Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger decided to vacate the post for a gubernatorial bid next year.

The race has proven to be one of the most competitive House contests in the country. Mr. Vindman, a former Army officer, is new to politics

His campaign focused on abortion rights and he tied his opponent to the “extreme” MAGA movement of former President Donald Trump.

Mr. Anderson — also a veteran — focused on the economy and painted Mr. Vindman as a “defund-the-police” radical.

The district is known to flip, although it was heavily Republican until Mr. Spanberger’s win in 2018.
