District of Columbia firefighters battled a blaze at an Amtrak maintenance yard in Northeast for over an hour overnight Monday into Tuesday. No one was injured.
The blaze started at 11:10 p.m. at the yard in the 1400 block of W Street NE outside, with diesel fuel possibly helping strengthen the fire, D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services posted on X.
Pictures also on X show train cars subsumed by the flames. Heat caused some damage, and hazmat crews worked to find and mitigate possible diesel runoff.
At least one of the wrecked railroad cars was a heritage locomotive, according to Trains.com.
