OPINION:
It’s heartening to see that the foundations of diversity, equity and inclusion are beginning to show signs of cracking in some settings (“Conservative campaign to limit diversity programs gains momentum in states,” web, April 24).
In contrast, the past several weeks/months of pro-Hamas, antisemitic unrest and violence at the nation’s so-called elite universities continues to demonstrate the sheer folly of DEI at the very top of these institutions (“Columbia says it had ‘no choice’ but to bring in NYPD after protest occupation; UCLA now erupts,” web, April 30).
That said, I suggest a small list of DEI candidates to replace several of the current heads of these universities. First is Condoleezza Rice, current director of the Hoover Institute at Stanford University. While serving as secretary of state, Ms. Rice literally faced down Vladimir Putin during a meeting. I’m positive she could handle a few campus misfits.
Next is Betsy DeVos, former secretary of education. When she held this position under the previous administration, Ms. DeVos had the temerity to put student education and safety over the desires of teachers unions, as she promoted charter schools and vouchers.
Last on my list is Michelle Rhee, former chancellor of the D.C. public school system. Ms. Rhee was well on the way to transforming the disaster known as D.C. public schools when she was ousted by the swamp within the swamp of the D.C. establishment — students be damned.
These great ladies duly represent DEI: all female, two minorities. The only thing holding them back is qualification, because they all are extremely qualified. Under current DEI and the makeup of the leadership of several of the elite universities, that makes them unqualified.
