OPINION:
Mr. May’s conjecture on what and how the head of Hamas was thinking when planning the Oct. 7 outrage ignores history (“Israelis will fight Hamas on their own if they must,” Web, March 26). The exact details are murky after the passage of time, but decades ago someone (a journalist, perhaps?) pointed out to the head one of the various terrorist organizations that killing civilians produced bad press. He or she then either suggested or asked why the terrorists didn’t concentrate on military personnel and targets instead. The response gives great insight into the thought processes and methodology of terror: “Why should we fight tigers when there are so many sheep? “
Those called Palestinians have been used as political pawns for decades by their numerous and varied sponsors. Many have now become so radicalized that no state wants them as citizens. While they may deserve some sympathy, it doesn’t extend to tolerating barbarity. Or, for that matter, for their sponsors’ continued contributions to stoking the fires.
