OPINION:
Millions of Americans watched the season’s first presidential debate with great interest. This debate may very well be the most watched in American history.
Why was there so much interest, and how did we get here?

President Joe Biden appeared on the stage, and his struggles were evident within minutes. Many, many commentators have mentioned that it was painful to watch. How is it that this visibly diminishing man is the Democratic nominee?
President Biden is the Democratic nominee primarily because of tradition. It is an accepted political rule that party leadership never opposes an incumbent. The old-school political machine managed by the old guard now must face President Biden’s revealing performance at last night’s debate.
The Democratic Party leadership is in a panic. The president has officially received the party nomination, and party rules state that only he can decide to relinquish it.

The Democrats are in a tough spot.
President Biden debated to protect rights. Progressive politicians do not recognize that our rights come from our Creator, as our Declaration of Independence describes. The Left agenda is a litany of rights: abortion rights, gay rights, transgender rights, climate rights, migrant rights, voting rights, to name a few. This has been an effective strategy. The American public seems to accept policies framed as “rights” without considering them fully. For example, the exercise of “abortion rights” involves killing an unborn child, and “transgender rights” allow minors to mutilate their bodies, sometimes without parental knowledge. The Progressive mantra of fighting for “rights” typically reduces individual freedom. One example is the new Biden administration Title IX rules that will mandate pronoun usage and how school clubs are formed.
Former President Donald Trump walked onto the stage and spoke with the confidence everyone expects of him. He is polling higher than President Biden, whose approval ratings continue to fall.
At Intercessors for America, we hear from millions of Americans who feel they need to be protected from an out-of-control government. Many see President Trump as strong enough to fight for them. Maybe one of the keys to his ongoing popularity is that people constantly witness his ability to fight for what he believes.
President Trump debated to protect freedoms. His policy position on abortion is to allow states to decide the democratic process within states. This advances freedom because each state can choose what it wants for its community. President Trump argued for a closed border to protect the freedoms of American individuals. He could have made a stronger argument by mentioning our open border’s effect on drugs and human trafficking instead of describing illegal immigrants as released prisoners and patients of insane asylums, which has not been corroborated. President Trump argued that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization should do its part in Ukraine to protect our nation’s financial freedom in the future.
According to our Constitution, the president’s responsibilities are to execute our nation’s laws, nominate judges to protect the rule of law and protect our nation from outside forces. Thursday’s debate was a job interview for the American public to decide who they would choose.
We at Intercessors for America prayed that the American public would be able to discern the truth while watching this election. I believe that prayer was answered. Questions about President Biden’s health and cognitive abilities were answered, and vastly different policy ideas were presented.
