The interest in professional Women’s sports is growing at a break-neck, exponential pace nationwide. Much of that attention has been focused on basketball and the WNBA, but it was women’s soccer — specifically the success of the United States women’s national team — that made the first inroads into America’s collective sports consciousness.

It’s a trend that’s continuing here locally with the Washington Spirit. D.C.’s professional women’s soccer team is third in the National Women’s Soccer League standings, boasting a league-leading nine wins and an undefeated mark in their last five matches.

Fresh off setting a single-game club attendance record of nearly 20,000, the Spirit are on pace to best last year’s average attendance, their first at Audi Field in Southwest, and are a contender for their second NWSL championship.

Michael Minnich of the Washington Spirit broadcast team joined the District of Sports podcast to discuss the scene at Audi Field after a club-record crowd of 19,897 saw the Spirit draw with the San Diego Wave after sensational rookie Croix Bethune’s stoppage-time equalizer, the growth of professional women’s soccer amid increased interest in women’s sports, and what to expect from the U.S. Women’s National Team at the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.

You can hear Michael alongside Bram Weinstein and Gaby Vincent on the next Washington Spirit broadcast June 22 at 1:30 p.m. as the Spirit visit Gotham FC. They return home to Audi Field to take on the North Carolina Courage on June 29 at 7:30 p.m. Games can always be found on the ESPN 630 app and online.
