“Tide is turning against ranked choice voting” (web, June 12) was an informative read. Everyone should realize that ranked choice voting, or RCV, is not inconsistent with the workings of democracy and the virtues democracy delivers.

Instead, a runoff election between the top two candidates grants the voters a second look, forcing those candidates to focus on the middle and beyond their political bases. Importantly, the winner takes office with everyone knowing that all voted received were cast directly for him or her. The RCV winner never earns a mandate because his win comes from the award of default votes from voters who preferred someone else.
