Workers for a roofing company found a dead baby in a bag thrown away in a dumpster behind a Hollywood, Florida, apartment building Monday morning, local police said.

Infinity Roofing was getting ready to repair the roof of the Rodman Condominiums when worker David Vasquez discovered the dead baby at about 8 a.m. and called police.

“I went to open the bag. When I opened the bag, I saw the baby, and it was already lifeless because I noticed a bad odor,” Mr. Vasquez told WFOR-TV.

Lifesaving measures were undertaken when police arrived, but the baby remained unresponsive, Hollywood Police Department spokesperson Deanna Bettineschi told The Associated Press. The gender and race of the baby were not disclosed.

“The guys were shook. No one expects something like that. It’s really affected the entire company,” Infinity Roofing owner John Mitala told the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

The police are asking locals for any video footage they might have of the area as part of a continuing effort to find suspects in the infant’s death and disposal.

“If you live near this area … and you believe that you have some kind of footage on your Ring camera or on your doorbell camera, please don’t hesitate to call us. If you … have one of those vehicles that are constantly recording to take a second, look at your vehicle, see if you have anything that would be useful to us,” HPD Officer Christian Lata told WPLG-TV.
