A house fire in Cascade, Maryland, left a woman and baby injured and a toddler dead Friday.

The fire broke out sometime before 6:20 p.m. in a house converted into apartments.

By the time firefighters arrived, several of the structure’s occupants had escaped, but the 2-year-old child was trapped inside, the Maryland state fire marshal said in a release.

The 24-year-old woman and 1-year-old baby were outside the burning home when firefighters arrived. The woman was airlifted to a hospital in the District of Columbia while the baby was taken to a local hospital by ambulance, said Maryland fire officials, who didn’t specify the nature or severity of their injuries.

In addition to the three victims, eight other people were displaced. Officials did not identify the deceased or the two injured pending family notification.

The cause of the fire is being investigated. State fire officials said investigators didn’t find working fire alarms inside the home.
