All my life I’ve lived in a small urban area, which I consider as close to the true setting of “West Side Story” as it’s possible to get. (I think my town is more like it than anything Broadway or Hollywood could ever create.)

My lifelong confidante lived her entire life emulating Chita Rivera in Ms. Rivera’s role as Anita in that popular movie (“Chita Rivera, revered and pioneering Tony-winning dancer and singer, dies at 91,” web, Jan. 30).

It was my best friend’s dream role, though she never got to play it, not even in community theater. I am surprised by the number of new friends I have who say that they, too, were inspired by Ms. Rivera.

My community has a large Puerto Rican heritage. Chita Rivera was an inspiration to us all.
