D.C. police on Tuesday arrested a man in connection with the New Year’s Day fatal shooting of a woman at a Friendship Heights hotel.

Metropolitan Police said they arrested Jelani Cousin, 18, of Northeast, and charged him with second-degree murder in the slaying of 18-year-old Ashlei Hinds of Clinton, Maryland.

Authorities originally responded to the shooting around 1:20 a.m. Monday at the Embassy Suites hotel in the 4300 block of Military Road Northwest.

Officers arrived to find Ms. Hinds suffering from gunshot wounds inside a seventh-floor hotel room. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The killing was the District’s first homicide of 2024.

The city is coming off one of its most violent years since the late 1990s, with 274 homicides in 2023. Police said they have arrested suspects in 47% of those cases.
