A Louisiana judge handed a New Orleans teenager a potential life sentence Friday for his role in a gruesome carjacking in which the 73-year-old victim had her arm torn off while being dragged to death.
John Honore, 18, will serve 25 years to life for the carjacking that killed Linda Frickey in March 2022. Honroe, who was 17 at the time of the incident, was found guilty of second-degree murder during a November trial.
Frickey’s family members showed little remorse for the harsh sentence given to Honore.
“He’s a little jerk, he’s a little punk, and he deserves to go where he is going,” Jinnylynn Griffin, Frickey’s sister, said after the hearing. “He is a demon, and God saw that demon that day, and that’s how Linda’s arm got severed.”
Prosecutors said Honore and three girls approached Frickey on March 21, 2022, when Honore pepper-sprayed the victim, pulled her partially out of the car and stomped and punched her in the head.
The prosecutors said Frickey was “screaming and pleading for him to stop,” before Honore hopped in the driver’s seat and dragged the victim over 700 feet to her death.
Frickey’s arm became tangled in her seatbelt during the incident, causing her to be dragged alongside her stolen SUV.
The victim’s arm was ripped off when Honore drove over a curb and struck a utility pole. Witnesses at the scene said the woman was still alive when they rushed to her aid.
“This woman was skinned alive, tortured, and I can’t imagine the pain she went through,” witness Leanne Mascar said during the November trial.
The defense sought to get a lighter sentence for Honore given his unstable upbringing, but the judge stuck with the sentence. Honore could be up for parole after serving 25 years.
The three girls involved in the carjacking — Briniyah Baker, 17, Lenyra Theophile, 16, and Mar’Qel Curtis, 16 — were given 20-year sentences after pleading guilty to manslaughter charges.
