It is one thing to opine that former President Donald Trump’s actions on Jan. 6 were outside his presidential responsibilities and therefore should not covered by presidential immunity, but that is not what a federal appeals court in Washington did this week (“Trump not immune from prosecution,” page 1, Feb. 7).

The court held that since Mr. Trump is no longer president, he is not covered by presidential immunity. That makes zero sense and should scare any current or future president. It basically means that, depending on the whims of the political party in power, after leaving office any U.S. president may be subject to criminal prosecution for legitimate steps taken while in office. One man’s great achievement is another man’s crime.

We have arrived at a point in our history where our laws are subjective and primarily based upon one’s political perspective. Many if not most judges now make rulings based upon their personal political views and not upon the law and the Constitution. We are in very serious trouble indeed.
