We are living in a post-Christian culture where people still retain some residual knowledge and understanding of God and the Bible. Many certainly believe in heaven and like the idea of going there, but they’re not too keen on the specifics of how or why they deserve to go.

And so there appears to be an effort to remake Jesus into who we would like him to be rather than who he is according to the Bible (“Is everyone watching the ‘He Gets Us’ ads all wrong?” web, Feb. 14).

Going to heaven? All in! Being told you are a sinner? Not so much. Enter the “woke” Jesus of the “He Gets Us” campaign, which is all about affirming people in their sin lest they be told to repent and take offense. This is the Jesus of a culture that is corrupting justice by turning the biblical understanding of right and wrong upside down, while making tolerance its highest virtue. That is, unless you are trying to wave the culture off its destructive path. Or you still believe in sin, repentance and the certainty of hell for those who reject the free offer of salvation available to all.

For such Christians, there is a growing intolerance, as believers are censored, marginalized and vilified for living their faith. Then again, Jesus said persecution would come to his true followers. And in that sense, Jesus really does “get us.”
