Congress is not broken; it is functioning as it was designed to function (“Biden, Congress stick broke taxpayers with overseas war bills while ignoring invasion here at home,” web, Feb. 22). Our country is deeply divided, morally and politically, on a number of critical issues.

These include the southern border, diversity and inclusion efforts, gender and sexuality, and climate and the greening of America — and they are symptoms of the larger problem.

Do we believe there is no God? That human wisdom is sufficient to create an ideal world? Do we believe in Mother Earth, an entity we have so offended that we must sacrifice ourselves to it in order to avert annihilation? Or do we believe in the Judeo-Christian God and God’s created order?

Our country was founded on principles derived from the latter, but we seem to be moving away from this view. Whom do we serve now?
