OPINION:
I was disappointed to read in The Washington Times that President-elect Donald Trump has filed a brief asking the Supreme Court to pause its consideration of the TikTok case that is before it (“Trump urges Supreme Court to delay TikTok ban, citing national security and free speech balance,” web, Dec. 30).
First, the case grows out of legislation that was signed into law earlier this year. The question, then, is whether the legislation meets the requirements of the Constitution.
Second, the Supreme Court has every responsibility to consider the case and render a final decision.
Last, Mr. Trump may certainly express his opinions on the case anytime he chooses to do so, but he has to recognize and respect the separation of powers reflected in the Constitution as they apply to this case.
