OPINION:
Regardless of how one may feel about former President Donald Trump, the recent assassination attempt against him represents, at best, a catastrophic and historic failure of our Secret Service. At worst, it is yet more evidence of the weaponization of our governmental “deep state” agencies, which are willing to do whatever it takes to prevent Mr. Trump from becoming president again.
Providing insufficient — and in some cases, poorly trained — guards, failing to secure all areas of obvious danger (e.g., all nearby rooftops), not immediately stopping the immature assailant before he fired his weapon (despite numerous pleas from attendees who saw him) and the total stonewalling and bizarre responses form the former and current Secret Service directors seem to point to an unprecedented cover-up.
But regardless of whether there was malfeasance, the assassination attempt of a former president and the killing of a rally attendee are national tragedies that have alienated millions of Trump supporters and caused millions more Americans to lose trust in their own government. This is very dangerous, and we should all be concerned.
