The issue of abortion is like staring at a solar eclipse without protective glasses: blinding. A significant number of both “pro-choice” and “pro-life” voters are simply unable to see beyond it.

I am strongly against abortion, but I am also realistic. In order to have a positive impact on the issue and all other critical issues of our time, we need like-minded decision-makers in office — specifically, in the presidency. Donald Trump is the man who finally got Roe v. Wade overturned. The legal result of reversing that decision is to return to the states the responsibility of making abortion policy. That’s called states’ rights. Now abortion policy is determined by the people of each state, through their elected officials.

Pro-lifers and pro-choicers alike can now lobby their elected officials and fellow state residents to determine that state’s position on abortion. Politically and legally, that is the correct way to address abortion and the way our president should address that issue, regardless of his/her personal position on abortion. And that’s exactly what Mr. Trump — who is personally pro-life — announced this week.

Both sides should be celebrating his position, which is to keep the federal government out of the process and let the voters of each state determine that state’s laws on abortion. This is known as a win-win.

Now let’s get Mr. Trump elected again.
