Our daughter obtained undergraduate degrees in history, classics and English from the University of Maryland in 2006. She did this all in five years and was named to the Philip Merrill Presidential Scholars Program in the School of Arts and Humanities in part because in high school she enrolled in honors courses in math and psychology, for which she received college credit.

She went on to earn graduate degrees in classics from Cambridge University in England and library science from the University of Michigan, where she is now the papyrus collection manager.

My wife and I paid for these degrees by taking out equity loans. So it would seem the American dream is still achievable — through home equity loans, not necessarily through federal loan forgiveness programs. Perhaps those willing to serve as teachers or medical professional in underserved areas could pay off their own loans that way.
