The Timberline Lodge in Government Camp, Oregon, famous as the Overlook Hotel in the 1980 Stanley Kubrick movie “The Shining,” caught fire Thursday night.
The fire broke out at around 9:30 p.m. local time, and visitors and staff were evacuated. While the exact cause is being investigated, the hotel and ski lodge said embers from the fireplace were suspected to have set the roof on fire.
The Clackamas County Fire District said the blaze was a three-alarm commercial fire and that no injuries were reported. By 11:12 p.m., the fire had been put out, fire officials said.
Timberline Lodge said the fire and water damage was “benign” and mostly contained to the headhouse and lobby of the lodge. The fire did not get past the roof of the hotel.
Visitors credited staff with organizing a safe exit for everyone inside.
“When we came outside initially there was some glowing behind the building,” guest Cheri Boat told KGW-TV. “A lot of embers flying too, and it smelled like fire. It was a pretty crazy night, unexpected! But happy we’re safe. And the staff did an amazing job.”
The ski area on Mount Hood will reopen on Saturday, while the hotel is expected to reopen Sunday.
The Timberline Lodge was built in 1937 by the Works Progress Administration and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977, according to the lodge’s website. It operates in the Mount Hood National Forest under a special use permit from the U.S. Forest Service.
The U.S. Forest Service will be investigating the incident, CCFD said.
