OPINION:
The House and Senate are being asked to create a law that would give the president the authority to dismiss a postmaster general. The reasoning behind it is that if the president has the power to appoint a postmaster general, he or she should also be able to remove that person.
Current Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, who lacks experience in the U.S. Postal Service, proposed a plan to move rural carriers to the Stewart NY S&DC facility in New York. This has meant significant delays — some of up to 15 days — in mail delivery for residents in Walden and other areas of the state. Despite complaints from multiple residents, the USPS has not taken these concerns seriously and insists that the new system is effective.
It is clear that the USPS needs to address these problems and take accountability for the disruptions in mail delivery. I have reached out to the office of Rep. Pat Ryan’s office, which forwarded my letter to the USPS. Its response was dismissive, claiming that the system is working well. But it clearly isn’t.
