Those pro-lifers reacting so vigorously to former President Donald Trump’s announced stance on abortion need to consider what they have opposed since 1973 (“Pro-life community, why are you so hard on Trump?” web, April 10).

For 50 years, the argument has been that the Supreme Court legislated from the bench, created a scientific theory out of thin air and then found it hidden in the Constitution. Or else the argument has been that abortion is a states’ rights issue and should be decided at the state level rather than in Washington.

Some of those same pro-lifers are now wanting our legislators to come up with a ban on abortion at the federal level, the exact opposite of the evil perpetuated by the Roe v. Wade decision. If it were true that Roe v. Wade forced a decision allowing abortion on the residents of the states that opposed it, how would a federal ban on abortion not do the same thing, only in reverse, to the residents of states that favor some form of abortion?

Mr. Trump’s stance is the only argument that makes sense, and it must win the day. It is now up to those same pro-lifers to do the hard work of persuading legislators at the state level, rather than in Washington, that abortion is a societal evil that must be ended. The Dobbs decision just made that work possible.
