Let’s not blame America’s failed education system on illegals: The Department of Education is perfectly capable of failing on its own (“New estimate says U.S. now has 13.7 million illegal immigrants, up 37% under Biden,” web, March 28).

Such is the promise of socialism when it centrally controls the production of goods and services such as education. Mao demonstrated that by betting “all in” with his version of socialist-communism. What happened? Tens of millions of people died.

For example, math is the language of science, and it is basic to understanding cause and effect. Together, they prepare young people for gainful employment in technology, engineering and related professions. The National Assessment of Educational Progress reports that just 26% of eighth grade students are proficient in math; 31% are proficient in reading.

Was Thomas Jefferson prescient when he wrote in the Declaration of Independence about “unalienable Rights” and “the pursuit of Happiness”? Jefferson’s government did not guarantee happiness. It only protected each individual’s right to pursue it.

Parents in 1776 had the same responsibility we have today: to prepare our children to be all they can be, whether in trades or in professions. It’s a responsibility that is foremost in the philosophy of individualism but notably absent in the philosophy of socialism.
