OPINION:
A lot of pro-lifers are upset at Donald Trump for his stand on abortion (“Trump declines to endorse a national abortion ban and says it should be left to the states,” web, April 8). Despite the belief that supporting a national ban would be election suicide, I don’t believe that’s his only reason.
Mr. Trump has been consistent in saying that controversial moral issues should not be dictated by the federal government, but rather should be guided by local communities. He understands that leaving the issue to the states allows those with radical abortion views to move or travel to a state that supports their views.
Abortion has been a fact of life as long as human history has been recorded. Criminalizing it nationwide would only again drive it underground. That’s a radical solution no one should support.
As the science of the unborn advances, support for some restriction on abortion is increasing to the point that regulating abortion has majority support. Removing the stigma of being unwed and pregnant now allows many women to accept a surprise pregnancy. Liberalizing adoption procedures has encouraged many other women not to abort.
It’s up to us in the pro-life movement to persuade others to embrace life for the unborn and to ensure that options are available to support women through unwanted pregnancies.
