If you had told Karen Pence that she would be back on the campaign trail with her husband and former Vice President Mike Pence, she wouldn’t have believed you. But God has a way of working things out, and the former Second Lady now believes the two are exactly where God wants them to be. In fact, the Pences continue to lean heavily on their faith as they seek to make a return to the White House and lead the country in a positive new direction.

“God has prepared Mike for this moment,” Mrs. Pence recently shared with the Washington Times’ Higher Ground. “Having served in the Congress and been a leader in the Congress and really been a fighter in the Congress… and then to be Governor of Indiana and then to be Vice President… he likes to say, ‘I would be ready on day one. I would know what to do and I would know who to do it with.’”
But Mrs. Pence wasn’t so confident that being First Lady was God’s plan for her.
Despite seeing the struggles facing the country and knowing how qualified her husband would be for the job, the former school teacher said she “really resisted” the idea of returning to politics. That all began to change when the couple committed to daily Bible reading and prayer together.
“It has made us so unified as a couple,” Mrs. Pence said. “And we are seeing some of the stories in the Bible where people experienced a lot of the things that we’ve experienced, and they had been maligned and they had been misunderstood and they had people attacking them, and it really helped me to come to that point where I said, ‘Mike, I think I’m there. I think I want to do this. I think I want us, just like we did before, step out and see what God wants to do with this.’”
“I don’t know if He’ll have us win or even win the nomination,” she continued, “but I know that He’s using us in a mighty way.”
That immersion in God’s word and prayer has been a staple in the Pences’ lives over the years. From raising up children who love the Lord, to living out their faith in the political spotlight, their daily walk with God has been the foundation of the Pences’ relationship since the beginning.
“Every day we’ll have a struggle or doubt or a question, and I think there are times where we actually kind of remind ourselves, ‘We’re not trusting God in this decision, we’re not trusting God in this journey or with this child or that decision,’ and we have to constantly remind ourselves that God is still in control,” Mrs. Pence noted. “He is on His throne. And when you stop in the busyness of the day-to-day and remind yourself, ‘Okay, I don’t have to run the world. I don’t have to run my kid’s lives. I just have to trust God and I just have to ask Him what He wants me to do today and listen to that still small voice.’”
And now, in the midst of the campaign trail, Mrs. Pence continues to see the fruits of stepping out in faith. In fact, the Pences recently learned that a man on the campaign trail surrendered his life to Jesus after hearing the couple’s testimony.
“[It’s] humbling to think that God is using us in such a mighty way,” she admitted. “I don’t know what the purpose is for this, but I know that we are where we’re supposed to be.”
