OPINION:
There are no asterisks on the Bill of Rights, which is something that New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has ignored, not forgotten (“New Mexico governor’s suspension of gun rights draws fire from police, Dems, gun control advocates,” web, Sept. 10).
Ms. Lujan Grisham’s order suspending open carry and other lawful possession of firearms is like taking away a defensive weapon from someone being attacked rather than taking away the attacker’s weapon. It is a clear non sequitur.
Even the local prosecutor and law enforcement officials are refusing to enforce it. I give them credit for their stance, regardless of their reasons. It takes courage to take a stand in this day and age.
But this is no accident. I do not consider myself conspiratorial, but the governor’s statement that no right is absolute is an echo of President Biden’s speech about COVID-19 some months ago. More sinisterly, it is an omen of how the Democrats would govern if they got the one-party rule they seek.
This is just one more push in that effort.
