I know several Democratic officials in Pennsylvania, and they made an interesting comment to me last weekend. They believe the state will go Republican unless something happens to derail the Donald Trump express. And they think the Trump court cases are a disaster for their party.

One said that if the Republicans have hard evidence of corruption and manage to impeach President Biden, Senate Democrats will vote to
convict because it lets them dump everything on Mr. Biden. He’s the crook, they’ll be able to say, and he deceived and took advantage of us all. They believe this will derail the election campaign, letting endangered senators make a move Republicans won’t be able to attack. It would also put Kamala Harris in the White House, a huge first.

The Democrats also seem to believe that the open convention will then be free to put up the Democrats’ strongest presidential candidate, Michelle Obama, who would enter the race at the last minute, clean and unencumbered.

It is curious logic, but I think it could actually work — especially because it would derail Ms. Harris and let them slide in the one candidate they really want. And make no mistake, the injection of the Obamas is not something the Republicans are prepared for.
