A worker at a commercial warehouse in South Philadelphia fell down an elevator shaft and died Friday.

The accident occurred around 10:30 a.m. when a 48-year-old man, unnamed by authorities, fell 20 feet down the shaft, Philadelphia police said, according to local news site PhillyVoice.com.

The man incurred a head injury from the fall and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding medical personnel. The building is under renovation, according to WCAU, a Philadelphia NBC affiliate.



The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident, a spokesman for the city’s Department of Licensing and Inspections told The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The man’s name was not revealed publicly.
