The savage recent attacks by Hamas on the Israeli towns near Gaza are extraordinary. Western civilization is not accustomed to such barbarism, although for several years the Islamic State was something of an exception.

As far as I am concerned, Islamophobia should be redefined as the reasonable, rational fear that such misbehavior may soon happen to you, your family and your nation. As a matter of fact, the words and actions of Rep. Rashida Tlaib provide me no comfort.

This should not be considered a broadbrush condemnation of all of Islam. In the United States and Israel, there are Muslims who are excellent citizens and disgusted by the behavior of Hamas. In addition, Azerbaijan, for example, has long had excellent relations with both the U.S. and Israel and seems to share our values.

On the other hand, Turkey, which was the first Muslim nation to recognize Israel, has fallen to a much lower level.

I also recognize and praise those Muslims who retain their religious belief and strive to bring peace, respect and prosperity to others in our world. I hope and believe Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman may be one of them.

Finally, while the mindset of Ms. Tlaib is disturbing, what concerns me even more is the attitude of students in our top universities. Real, widespread terrorism, massive torture and murder are somehow disregarded. I believe this is a matter for congressional investigation and funding adjustments.
