Former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III will plead guilty to two charges for his role in a 2021 deadly crash where he is accused of killing a woman.
The former NFL star unconditionally waived his right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday in Nevada court, according to ESPN.
He is expected to formally plead guilty to one count of DUI resulting in death and one count of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter during his next court hearing on May 10.
Under the plea agreement, the 24-year-old will serve three to 10 years in state prison.
“This is the first step toward a fair resolution to this matter and we look forward to closure for all the parties involved,” David Z. Chesnoff and Richard A. Schonfeld, attorneys for the football player, said in a statement released after Tuesday’s proceedings.
Police said the athlete was driving his Corvette 156 mph while under the influence of alcohol when he crashed into a Toyota Rav4 being driven by 23-year-old Tina Tintor on Nov. 2, 2021. Â
The collision sent the victim’s car tumbling over 500 feet and ruptured its gas tank, causing the vehicle to catch on fire. A coroner ruled in December 2021 that the woman and her golden retriever burned to death in the car.
Police said that he had a blood alcohol content of 0.16 — twice the legal limit in Las Vegas — when his blood was drawn later in the hospital after he refused to take a field sobriety test.
The Raiders released the wide receiver shortly after the crash. He was drafted by the organization in 2020 after having played college football at the University of Alabama.
