OPINION:
Once again, our country finds itself being exploited by foreign countries — and once again, we create crises that should not occur (“Post-Title 42 border security is an affront to American sovereignty,” web, May 16).
Unsurprisingly, the Biden administration finally admitted recently that it is powerless to stop the chaos. As expected, certain liberal media outlets have attempted to downplay the crisis, claiming that since there was no overwhelming “surge” of crossings immediately following the end of Title 42, no such surge would ever happen.
In my opinion, a surge is inevitable. But even if it were not, how do we handle the huge number of illegals already here? This administration has demonstrated its inability to handle crises by repeatedly waiting until it is too late to fix them and falling behind in safety and security measures.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas recently announced new immigration rules, which should have been instituted two years ago after the first significant invasion. Based on these, I doubt the government will follow through with deportations.Â
Our foreign adversaries see our weakness and how our ineffective border laws allow cartels to make money off our poorest citizens. In 1956, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev said Russia would “destroy [America] from within,” and nearly seven decades later, it seems he was partly right. A country cannot survive if its borders are compromised. Border collapse is the death knell of a nation. Â
As a taxpayer, I expect officials to protect and uphold the rule of law. Yet it seems they do not. How do we stop huge numbers of illegal immigrants who don’t respect our laws from entering our country and pushing our social and welfare services into bankruptcy?
It is the job of our so-called leaders to protect us citizens from domestic crises such as drugs and crime, and they are failing.Â
