As noted in “Texas VA clinic removes ’Remember Our Veterans’ metal cross after watchdog complains” (web, March 20), the Department of Veterans Affairs recently bowed to the demands of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation by removing a metal cross from its military display in Austin.

They said it violated the establishment clause of the First Amendment.

The woke mentality, so prevalent in America today, attempts to remove any reference to our Christian heritage, of which the cross of Jesus Christ is the most recognizable symbol. Those who conspire to remove the cross have little understanding of history.

It was the cross that inspired William Wilberforce to fight in Parliament against the slave trade in the British Empire. Ultimately, this helped abolish the evil of slavery throughout the free world. It was the cross that served as the foundation of organizations such as Samaritan’s Purse, Food for the Poor and World Vision, all of which provide humanitarian aid to those in need, regardless of religious affiliation. And it was the cross that inspired the Pilgrims to sign the Magna Carta, establishing guidelines for the governance of a nation in which the individual rights of all citizens, believers and no-believers, would be protected.

It is ironic that the more secularists have attempted to stamp out Christianity, the more it has flourished, as the Roman Empire, Stalin and the Chinese Communist Party could attest.
