OPINION:
Those who believe the mainstream media’s claims that Donald Trump paid no taxes for years may want to turn off CNN and get out of the basement (“Rep. Kevin Brady sounds off on release of Trump taxes: ‘Every American ought to be frightened,’” Web, Jan. 1). While it is true that Trump paid no federal income tax in some years, in others he paid nearly $1 million. What Kool-Aid drinkers have failed to bother learning is that an estimated 72.5 million households (40%) will pay no federal income taxes at alI for 2022, according to analysis from the Tax Policy Center.
Some households receive a net profit due to credits such as the earned income credit. Mr. Trump and the 40% of households who will pay no taxes this year are merely using the tax laws to their advantage.
What it needed is tax law reform. A flat tax or fair tax would go a long way toward ensuring that everyone has “skin in the game” when it comes to paying federal taxes.
