The Washington Commanders are rolling with their rookie.
The Commanders will start rookie quarterback Sam Howell in Sunday’s season finale against the Dallas Cowboys, coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday. Rivera announced the decision after practice, where Howell took the primary reps.
Howell gets the nod after Washington was eliminated from the playoffs over the weekend with a loss to the Cleveland Browns. Washington drafted Howell in the fifth round in last April’s draft out of North Carolina.
Rivera said Taylor Heinicke — not Carson Wentz, who started against Cleveland — will be the team’s primary backup.
