The pilot of a single-engine plane was killed Thursday when he crashed into a parking lot at the Lake Lanier Islands Resort in Buford, Georgia, about 60 miles north of Atlanta.

The crash happened at around 5:15 p.m. The pilot, Howard Lee Joe, 60, of Dunwoody, Georgia, was the only person onboard the plane, the Hall County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on Facebook. No one on the ground was injured.

A purported video of the aftermath taken by a witness, sent to a WAGA-TV reporter and posted on X, shows the wreckage burning and the parking lot still smoldering.

Mr. Joe had taken off in his Beechcraft Bonanza from DeKalb-Peachtree Airport in Chamblee, Georgia, just over 38 miles southwest of Lake Lanier at 5 p.m., according to flight tracking website FlightAware.

The crash is now being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board, the sheriff’s office said.
