A jury ruled that former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani must pay $148 million in damages to a pair of Georgia election workers he defamed following the 2020 election.
The eight-person jury decided on the award after a nearly weeklong trial in a federal court in Washington.
Mr. Giuliani, who served as former President Donald Trump’s lawyer and advisor at the end of his tenure in the White House, was sued by Ruby Freeman and her daughter Shaye Moss.
A federal judge previously ruled that Mr. Giuliani was liable for defaming the mother-daughter duo. He spread false claims that the pair engaged in a fake ballot processing scheme while they worked as election workers in Fulton County.
The jury’s $148 million verdict is much higher than what the pair were asking. Ms. Freeman sought $23.9 million, while her daughter asked for $24.7 million.
Mr. Giuliani is required to pay much more:
• $16,171,000 to Ms. Freeman for defamation.
• $16,998,000 to Ms. Moss for defamation.
• $40 million to both for emotional distress.
• $75 million in punitive damages to both.
