The Washington Commanders announced a $40 million investment Thursday in FedEx Field, including “significant upgrades” to the stadium infrastructure, renovated suites and updated branded imagery around the stadium.

The investment shapes up as one of the first major developments under owner Josh Harris, who pledged to overhaul the fan experience and reengage with the community after buying the franchise for a record $6.05 billion.

The Commanders have also installed a new sound system and new video boards at the stadium, though those renovations were under way before Harris took over. FedEx Field, located in Landover, Maryland, has been widely criticized as one of the league’s most outdated venues. The renovations seem to be aimed at changing that reputation.

“We have the best fans in football — and they deserve the best gameday experience,” said Trisha Langdon, Commanders senior vice president of operations and guest experience, in a statement. “These upgrades to FedEx Field represent an immediate and tangible step to improve that experience, something our ownership group considers to be a top priority.”

Langdon said those changes will continue throughout the coming season.

The major updates include three new themed suites that will cater to “large groups looking to take their gameday experience to the next level.” Those suites include an arcade-themed suite that features an air hockey table and video games, a “legends” suite with player locker, benches and astroturf carpets and a military suite that celebrates service members with custom artwork.

The Commanders have also focused on seeing updated team-branded signage across the stadium and around the concourse. The team said there will be new ticket-scanning pedestals, as well as other point-of-sale upgrades. There have also been a number of maintenance repairs to the bowl and paint around the stadium.

The team said that there will be 12 new food vendors this year — a group that includes Paisano’s Pizza, Fuku by David Chang and Hill Country BBQ.

The Commanders’ release also encouraged fans to arrive as early as three hours prior to kickoff for an experience at Legends Plaza. The outdoor area will include live music, tailgate games and interactive events such as being able to watch the team’s live gameday show. During that portion, beers are also discounted starting at $6.75.

Langdon said the Commanders have a “re-imagined pregame ritual.” Washington begins the season Sept. 10 when it hosts the Arizona Cardinals for a 1 p.m. start.

“We are excited for fans to come home and see all the changes,” Langdon said.
