LANDOVER — The Washington Commanders face the NFL’s top-ranked offense Sunday, and will be down a few key defenders in the process.
Cornerback William Jackson III and defensive end James Smith-Williams were among Washington’s inactives that were announced 90 minutes prior to kickoff against the Philadelphia Eagles. Both starters are out with injuries as Jackson is dealing with a sore back and Smith-Williams was sidelined with an abdomen issue.
Jackson was a late addition to the team’s injury report. After practicing through the week, Jackson was added to the list Saturday and was listed as questionable heading into the game. The cornerback was seen working out before Sunday’s contest, but the Commanders ultimately decided to hold Jackson out for at least a week.
Rachad Wildgoose, who the team claimed off waivers after cut down day, is expected to start in Jackson’s place.
As for Smith-Williams, his loss is also significant given how thin Washington is along the defensive line. Three defensive linemen were among the team’s seven inactives, with defensive end Casey Toohill (concussion) and defensive tackle Daniel Wise (ankle) out. Second-round defensive tackle Phiadarian Mathis suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
