Cal Thomas writes that in the wake of Hurricane Ian, Vice President Kamala Harris could have made a nation-unifying statement regarding supplies, search and rescue efforts (“Hurricane Kamala,” Web, Oct. 5). However, given her penchant for gaffes, I think Ms. Harris should have instead said nothing. As Mark Twain said, “It is better to be silent and let others think you a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.”

Ms. Harris has in no way been involved in the cleanup and aid activities in Florida. Nevertheless, she implied racism was at play in those activities in one of her latest equity-equality word salads: “It is our lowest-income communities and our communities of color that are most impacted by these extreme conditions and impacted by issues that are not of their own making. … And so we have to address this in a way that is about giving resources based on equity … “

Ms. Harris’ attempt, like those of other leftists, is to resurrect and fight wars that have long since been won, and to reopen old wounds long since healed. Her remarks are supportive of self-appointed “social justice warriors” who intimidate and demand money from Whites, afflicted with assumed guilt, to address the ills of “people of color.” However, the funds never reach those for whom they are intended, except for the portion used to support “free stuff” trinkets, protest marches and other such gatherings. In days gone by, these people were called poverty pimps. Regardless of the name applied, they keep racial animosity stirred up to justify their own existence.

There is no reason to believe the federal government or the state of Florida will fail to act in accordance with the needs of all who have suffered because of Hurricane Ian.

There is a saying, common to Black folk, which is used when another person has shown decided ignorance: “Go somewhere and sit down.” Someone should get a permanent seat for Kamala.
