Rowan Scarborough’s “Trump botched DOJ appointments; Biden is relishing his” (Web, Oct. 5) may be the most important op-ed you have published in recent memory. There can be little doubt that the Department of Justice is currently led by political partisans who have put their leftist ideology ahead of fair and neutral application of the law. They have used the immense power of the federal government to inflict damage and get revenge on their political opponents, some of whom are little more than private citizens exercising constitutional rights. These are people with limited means to respond. This truly egregious situation undermines perceptions about the fairness of our system of justice, perceptions that are fundamental to the future of the nation.

While blatant use of DOJ as a political weapon is a concept foreign to most Republicans, Mr. Scarborough is no doubt correct that President Trump should have more carefully addressed key staffing decisions at that agency. While I am grateful to President Trump for his accomplishments and courage, let’s hope that if he runs again, he will better consider this and other personnel-related matters (including the wisdom of avoiding nepotism in the White House).
